Mbalax developed in Senegal in the 1970s from the traditional music of the Wolof, the largest ethnic group of the country. It incorporated influences from Cuban, Congolese and American popular musics, and soon became the predominant pop music in Senegal and the neighbouring Gambia. In the following decades it has grown to be one of the most popular styles of Afropop, aided by the global popularity of Youssou N'Dour, Thione Seck and Baaba Maal. Mbalax is traditionally characterised by the rhythms played on sabar drums, although this traditional drum is occasionally replaced by a Western percussion set-up or even a drum machine.
